It was a big day for the Manly Wolves AFL club with all 4 teams playing at their home ground at Weldon Oval on Saturday. The Under 18s started the day off with a 10am game against Macquarie University. It seemed like a close match from the first whistle and frustrations rose scoring 17 behinds! But they fought hard, winning by 48 points. A severe calf contusion and an ankle sprain were the worse of the injuries.

Division 4 followed after the under 18s game but not with the same positive results. UTS beat division 4 by over 12 goals leaving the boys feeling defeated and one suffering an acute shoulder impingement. Division 2 had a good game against St George who could have beaten the Wolves if they managed to improve their accuracy during the match (14 behinds to the Wolves’ 3) the overall score for Manly was 13.3-81 compared to 7.14-56 to St George. Division 1 had a mighty easy match against Western Suburbs who only managed one point on the scoreboard. Congratulations to David Kovacevic who scored 12 of the 30 goals for the Wolves but it was a very strong performance by all players in the team. One player was sent to hospital for a facial clash in which stitches were required.

Another congratulations to Tommy Thurgland and Nathan Bosschieter who were selected from the Manly Wolves club to play for the Sydney Swans Reserves for the weekend game against the Brisbane Lions reserves!

Division 1 have a big game against UTS at Trumper Park on Saturday- kick off starting 12pm. All other teams are away at Nor West. We wish the club all the best.

At Penrith, Division 4 had their game against the team that fields their second side players so it was a tough ask for the Wolves from the start. Penrith were strong and ran away with the win right from the start. It was a good effort by the Wolves though who never gave in, reducing the difference in the last quarter. Two players with mild concussion signs were removed from the game and monitored for the rest of the match on the side line. Division one played a tough game against Penrith and was only just ahead by half time. But in the second half, the Wolves improved their performance and won the match comfortable. Division 2 had a close game against Camden but it was a second win for the club for the day, beating them by 22 points in the end. A high graded A/C joint sprain was the worse of the injuries for division 2.

It’s a big day for the Manly Wolves club next weekend with all teams playing at Weldon. The Under 18s will start the day off with a 10am kick off.

Weldon Oval held three of the four games for the Manly Wolves, while the Under 18s played away at Kellyville against Sydney Hills Eagles. Although the Under 18s team only fielded 17 players, a great fight throughout the match was shown and the Manly boys came up on top by just under 3 goals.

At Weldon, Division 4 started the day for the Wolves against North Shore. An inversion injury after landing from a jump showed one of our players carried off the ground in the 2nd quarter and an ambulance called for a suspected fracture. What looked like a close game in the first quarter blew out to a 7 goal win by the final whistle. Division 2 played Auburn and had an easy win by over 100 points, a hamstring strain being the only injury from the game. Division 1 finished the winning streak for the club beating Southern Power easy by 150 points making it four out of four wins.

Congratulations to a successful weekend for the Manly Wolves club. Next week, Under 18s have a bye, Division 4 and 1 will play away at Penrith and Division 2 is away against Camden. Good luck to the boys for those upcoming games.

Sydney Uni Lions were scheduled to play in the first semi-final against Freemantle on Saturday at 1:30pm. Finishing on top of their group, Sydney Uni was looking to continue their strong performance in a hope to make the grand final. But it wasn’t the start that they were hoping for, down 4-1 at first quarter time. From then on, Sydney Uni were on the back foot, having trouble catching up. A strong performance by Tom Kearns put a few extra goals on the board for Sydney Uni but in the end, it was Freemantle who placed themselves in the grand final beating the Lions 12-7.

Sydney Uni had their chance for a bronze medal on Sunday morning against UNSW Wests Magpies. Although Wests won the minor premiership by finishing first on the table, a loss to Victoria the previous day spoiled their hopes for a gold medal. Sydney Uni bounced back from their loss the previous night and challenged the favourites from the start. After the first quarter, the Lions were up by a goal but Wests evened the scoreboard to 4 goals by half time. Wests went into the final quarter winning 6-5 until Trent Franklin levelled the game for the Lions with 5 minutes to go. The score remained the same for the rest of the match and extra time was called. The first half of extra time saw Wests firing 2 goals and it was only with 2 minutes left of the game that Zac White brought it within one goal. Despite Sydney Uni having the last play of the game and an exclusion called on Wests, no goal could be scored and Wests won the bronze medal 8-7. It was a good game for the Lions by the whole team and heads were held high. Congratulations to the Sydney Uni Lions for a great season and to Alastair Visch who played his 400th National League game for the Sydney Uni Lions!

Finals week has started at Sydney Olympic Pool and with the Sydney Uni Lions finishing 5th, the boys were scheduled to play 3rd placed Victorian Tigers and 2nd placed Brisbane Barracudas on the first day of finals. The Lions needed at least one win for any chance of making the semi finals on Saturday, and didn’t the boys pick up their performance! Sydney Uni was up against Victoria at 12pm and, like finals should be, was down to the wire till the final whistle. By half time it was Victoria leading by one goal with a low score of 3-2. In the second half, nerves were up but Sydney Uni worked as a team from the start and continued to defend well. The hard efforts resulted in a well deserved win after Tom Kearns scored the final goal for the Lions to secure a 9-7 win.

It was back to the pool for the Lions who played a fresh Brisbane Barracudas at 6pm last night. Another win for the Lions would confirm a semi final position and had the crowd on their side for a local win for the underdogs. Although it was Sydney Uni’s second game of the match, spirits were high and there were no signs of fatigue showing. By quarter time, it was only one point the difference with the Lions up 3-2. By half time, it was 5 a piece and in the last three seconds of the third quarter, the Barracudas scored to lead 7-6 coming into the final quarter. With less than 5 minutes remaining, the Lions were awarded a 5m penalty to which Thomas Whalan converted leading the team 9-8 before Nathan Cargill scored the final goal for Sydney Uni. But there was still 2 minutes to go and the Barracudas weren’t finished, gaining a goal through a 5m penalty. Then with 30 seconds left of the game, Barracudas took it to a draw scoring to end the game 10-10. It was a great result for the Lions and congratulations to the boys, included coach Damien Nipper, for their fantastic performance. A well deserved semi final match will be played on Saturday with further details dependent upon today’s games in the remaining draw.

It was a wash out for division 2 on Saturday due to the heavy rain in the week but the rest of the teams were up away against Southern Power. The Under 18s kicked off the day against the Cronulla team in which, as always, was an exciting day when both teams meet. The under 18s were short on players and had no bench to sub fatigued players. As a consequence, a few ankle sprains, posterolateral corner injury and rib contusions didn’t help the player’s numbers or performance. It was loss for the boys but Division 4 and 1 were yet to play.

Division 4 looked strong from the first whistle, staying in the lead up until the final quarter. But it was all too late for Southern Power who just couldn’t overtake the Wolves, losing 16 points. Division 1 was extremely entertaining both on and off the field! The wolves were down by a goal at first quarter but at half time were only losing by one point. It was at half time that the heat and tension throughout the match were shown with a few physical incidences keeping the umpires busy. But it was back to the game in the second half and the Wolves managed to continue their good run, winning by 11 points. A concussion, finger and TMJ dislocation, an ankle sprain and multiple contusions displayed the well fought win for the boys. Good luck for the wolves for Saturday’s games at Weldon oval from 10am, with the Under 18s making their way out to play Sydney Hills Eagles away.

It was two weeks off for the Sydney Uni Lions with the Easter break and Australian water polo camp on since the last win against Drummoyne earlier in the month. Sydney Uni needed a win against Cronulla on Friday night to confirm their place in the finals. The boys were playing well from the start and continued right until the final quarter. Thomas Whalan and Alastair Visch were the leading goal scorers but Luke Northcott sealed the win with a fantastic goal from half way with only 2 seconds to go. The final score: 17-3.

Sydney Uni was up against Wests on Sunday afternoon in their final schedule match for the National League 2012. The game commenced at 1:00 pm and was played at Wests home pool at UNSW. It was neck to neck through the first quarter and scores were low by half time, Wests leading 3-2 after scoring in the final seconds. But Wests came out hard in the third quarter thanks to Wests’ leading goal scorers. Although Uni picked their performance up in the final quarter, it was all too late, losing 11- 6 to a team that finished first on the table.

Congratulations to Sydney Uni Lions who have now finished 5th place before heading into finals, held at Sydney Olympic Park from the 26th-29th of April. Sydney Uni are scheduled for two games on the Thurs; the first game is up against Victorian Tigers at 12 pm and the second against Brisbane Barracudas at 6pm. We wish the boys all the best of luck for their up coming games.

It was the first home game for the season with all four teams playing at Weldon Oval. Division 4 started the day with their 10am game against Nor West Jets. A 40 point win was the end result but with 16 behinds scored by Manly the score didn’t reflect the solid performance. Division 2 played their game well against Nor West Jets and also came up on top with a 40 point win. The Under 18s completed their game despite Parramatta forfeiting due to limited players. In good nature, Manly shared their players around and a shorter match was played and won by the Manly Wolves.

Division 1 had a close game against Holroyd Parramatta for the starting whistle. An adductor strain, hamstring strain and mallet finger put a couple of their star players at bay. But the boys stepped up in the final quarter, taking the lead and winning by 21 points- a score that does not represent the tension throughout the game. It will be a big test for the Division 1 team next week who will join the Under 18s and Division 4 away at Cronulla against Southern Power. Division 2 will complete their round 3 game away at Sydney University. We wish the boys good luck and remind them to manage their injuries with the RICER principle.

Welcome back to the Manly Wolves AFL club to another season of footy! Round 1 for the Under 18s, Division 4 and Division 1 was played on Saturday at Macquarie Uni. The Under 18s played first, game starting at midday. It was close for most of the game but the boys ran away with a strong win in the third quarter. Division four followed the under 18s win and both teams stayed neck to neck right until the last buzzer. In the last quarter, the Manly Wolves scored 2 goals to lead the game right up until a few minutes left. Then Mac Uni returned the result, scoring 2 quick goals to finish the match with a 4 point win. Division 1 had their game starting at 4:10pm. The championship winners from last season were looking forward for a strong win but again, it was neck to neck for most of the game until the last quarter when the wolves can through looking like they did towards the end of last season.

Division 2 played on Sunday against Balmain with kick off starting from midday. It wasn’t the best start for the Wolves who were down by 7 goals at half time. But the boys picked up their performance and although lost, drew the score line closer to within 3 goals. Injuries for the weekend include a concussion injury, a calf contusion, hamstring strains, a thumb sprain and plenty of facial cuts (including a bloody nose or two!). We have the Easter week off then the Manly Wolves are back in for round 2 for their first game of the season at Weldon! It will be a full day with all 4 teams playing.

It was derby day on Sunday- Sydney Uni Lions versus Drummoyne Devils and what a thriller match did it turn out to be! Both teams needed a win from the game to have the chance to get into finals. The lightening delayed the game by just over an hour but was back on for a 6:30pm start.

Sydney Uni struggled in the first half and didn’t even manage to get a goal, losing the first half 4-0. But an early goal turned things around for Uni.
