REAL TIME ULTRASOUND

Real time ultrasound can be used in order to obtain a “video” image of structures within the body. This non-invasive technology can be utilised to examine the size, the timing and the ability of a muscle to contract and can help retrain the muscles by providing visual feedback; an image seen by both the patient and physiotherapist.

Commonly, it is used to help assess the activation of transverses abdominal muscle (the “core”, stabilising muscle of the lower spine) in the treatment of low back pain, and pelvic floor muscle activation in the treatment of incontinence. Real time ultrasound can also be used for those who which to develop a high level of core strength and endurance. This non-invasive technology is a beneficial tool used to enhance treatment and recovery.
